The Fushimi Inari shrine visit is a unique experience and best of all it is free. See thousands of the red Tori gates, mostly donated by individuals and companies, walk up the hill and along the gates slowly and be immersed in that calm soot experience and don't forget to wear a good comfortable walking shoes.
About Fushimi Inari Shrine. Fushimi Inari Taishi and the walk up Mount Inari is easily Kyotos top attraction. Fushimi Inari Shrine is beyond doubt one of my favorite. The uncountable Japanese red torii or gates lined one after the other make this place mysterious and create a sort of interior atmosphere, inside. This work of art is located in the Fushimi ward in Kyoto. In 816, a monk named Kūkai requested the shrine to be moved to its present location.
6:00 P.M. on Yoimiya-sai, the day before Motomiya-sai. 9:00 A.M. on the first Sunday or holiday in July after Doyo: Motomiya-sai. A festival when worshippers from all the Inari shrines throughout Japan visit Inari Taisha, the main shrine, to express their gratitude for the daily protection and blessings they’ve received and pay their respects. To get to the Fushimi-Inari-Taisha temple, I took the JR train (Nara Line, also known as "D" Line) from Kyoto main station (140 yen). Trains on this line run maybe two per hour. Not more than 10 - 20 minutes later, I was at Inari station where I alighted. The temple was almost right in front of me.
